SCABIOSA
(Pincushion Flower)
'Black Knight' Scabiosa

Scabiosa.jpeg

Description

Scabiosa has been one of the most delightful discoveries in our dyeing journey. It is a favourite of local dyer Sunflower Knits. Our scabiosa was used to dye a wide range of colours for Manitoba Fibre Festival's 2023 Skein of the Year

Experiments

In our near pH neutral water, scabiosa produces an intense green on wool as seen in the photo of the cowl below. With the addition of citric acid, the colour can shift to lavender. Scabiosa also works well in bundle dyeing and eco-printing producing a strong purple. In fact, it's best to use sparingly lest the colour bleed excessively.
